Christmas chair socks

stripey cuteness

So, did you figure out what they were? Not an octopus or gloveless fingers, which was my favorite guess by the way! After all the octopus guesses, I really want to make one. They were actually chair socks!

Christmas chair socks

I've seen these on pinterest a lot and decided to make myself a crocheted version. I think they are so fun and cute! I'm even going to make some for after the Christmas season. They're a much cuter alternative to those ugly things you stick to the bottoms of the chairs.

For mine I used Bernat Handicrafter cottons in red sparkle, mod green and white.

Christmas chair socks

Want to make some? They're actually super easy to make, this is how I did it;

materials needed: 3.75mm (F)
worsted cotton yarn in 2 colors (about 50g of each color for a set of 4 socks)

Take your first color and make a magic circle
Round 1: sc 6 times into circle, join to the first sc (6)
Round 2: ch1, 2sc in each stitch, join to the first sc (12)
Round 3: ch1, *1sc in the first stitch, 2sc in the next* repeat until you reach the first sc and join (18)
Round 4: ch1, 1sc in each stitch, join to the first sc (18)
Round 5: switch colors and repeat round 4 (18)
Round 6-22: repeat round 5 (18)
Round 23-25: repeat last 3 rounds with just one color. Join last stitch to the first sc, fasten off and weave in your ends.

If you need help with making a magic circle, there's a really cute illustration that can help right here.
To get a clean color change, this tutorial is very helpful.

I hope I wrote out the pattern clearly, let me know if any of it doesn't make sense. If you make some of your own chair socks, I'd love to see them!

  12. I definitely never would have guessed the real answer for these crochet goodies. I, too, love the "gloveless fingers" answer, though.

  21. Cool idea. I have been buying tennis balls for my chairs to keep from scratching up my hardwoods. I'm going to make some to match my kitchen decor.

  22. I always have trouble with these sliding off my chair legs. Have you noticed that with yours or what is your trick for keeping them in place?

    1. I plan to make mine with a tight stitch and snug fit, and if necessary, run some thin elastic through at a couple levels. Since yours are already made, try the elastic idea, or a tight rubberband about an inch from the top, then fold it down over the band like a sock. Hope this helps.

  27. So, I'm assuming that you actually ch 1 after each join, even though you don't mention it, right?
I've been working amigurumis recently and accidentally started working this without the ch 1 because that's what those patterns actually called for.

    ...just making sure.

  28. what a great idea, I am buying a new home and hubby and I want hard wood floors so these would be great.

  29. The link to see how to make a magic circle is wrong though--it takes you to a totally unrelated page. But basically a "magic circle" is just a ring of chain stitches, right?

  30. These are great for just every day use. For that purpose, I'd stitch in a 2-3 layer of felt rounds inside at the base to support every day wear & tear. I have 4 kitchen chairs just waiting for these. This is such a creative idea, and can't wait to get started.

  31. My chairs are like these! I was always going to do the fabric socks with ruffles and ties -- now I have another choice! Crochet them!

Let's see how many years it takes for me to do more than print your pattern! ;-) My chairs are 54 years old now and still sockless.

These might work for pet socks, too!

  32. I've been crocheting chair'' booties'' for family for the past fifty years...made up my own pattern back then...quite close to this one except I don't join rounds.
